Earth’s tectonic plates separate along enormous submarine mountain chains. Magma rises, cools and forms oceanic crust. Pressure and water change how eruptions behave, so they may not resemble dramatic land volcanoes. Sonar, remotely operated vehicles and chemical sensors reveal these hidden processes and show how strongly geology shapes the ocean. The Ridbusters then compare the wording with the original sources, look for the conditions of each observation and check whether another explanation could fit. That turns a surprising headline into a trail a young investigator can follow: claim, test, result and remaining uncertainty.
