Hot springs, deep-sea vents, salt lakes and Antarctic ice host specialised microbes. Studying them helps scientists understand the limits of life, develop useful enzymes and plan searches for life beyond Earth. “Extreme” is a human-centred label: for the organism, its habitat is normal, while our environment might be unsuitable.
